Two of Japan's leading composers, Toru Takemitsu and Toshiro Mayuzumi, discuss their film music in a historic recording with Kuniharu Akiyama, now available on CD for the first time.

This precious recording was discovered half a century later among the tapes left behind by music critic Kuniharu Akiyama. It includes interview recordings from the series "People Shaping the History of Japanese Film Music," which ran in Kinema Junpo magazine from 1971 to 1978, as well as a valuable interview with Toru Takemitsu conducted after the completion of the film "Dodes'ka-den."

Their work with masters such as Akira Kurosawa and Kenji Mizoguchi, the creative process of film music, and the future of film music—first-class testimonies indispensable for understanding the history of Japanese film and music are vividly brought back to life in the composers' own voices.

The frank and lively way Takemitsu and Mayuzumi speak in this intimate dialogue, which only Kuniharu Akiyama could elicit, is something that cannot be easily gleaned from existing video and audio materials.

This CD project, made possible with the cooperation of Aki Takahashi, wife of Kuniharu Akiyama and a pianist; Masaki Takemitsu and Rintaro Mayuzumi, members of the two composers' families; and Nobukazu Uekusa (later editor-in-chief of Kinema Junpo), who planned the "People Who Shaped the History of Japanese Film Music" series, is an invaluable historical document for discussing the history of Japanese film and music culture, and at the same time, a precious document that allows us to touch upon the human charm of these two masters.

From the enjoyment of "listening" to film music, to the enjoyment of "knowing" and "thinking" about it—

a precious testimony to the history of Japanese film music, revived after half a century. Please listen to the voices of these two masters.
