Mitsuru Tabata + Jun Morita - Live Critique Of Judgement

Format: CD

Label: All Horned Animals Aha Discs [4988044822825]

RELEASE DATE: July 31, 2026

Opis:

This session was conducted entirely on the fly, with no prior planning whatsoever. (...)

For Tabata, who plays both guitar and bass, the appeal of improvising with Morita lay in the fact that while it's relatively easy to predict the next note a fellow string instrument player will play, Morita's keyboard and live electronics playing were completely unpredictable. Conversely, Morita describes Tabata Mitsuru as a guitarist with a high degree of sonic spontaneity, precise direction, a rich vocabulary underpinned by extensive musical listening experience, and a keen sense of sonic dynamics. On this day, Morita had prepared drum patterns on his modular synth, incorporating unique glitch noises while repeating rhythms from the second song onwards to facilitate the development of Tabata's guitar. Tabata, in turn, avoided overly complex interpretations, creating an environment where Morita could easily intervene. Perhaps as a result, there's a palpable sense of untapped sonic space in places. (…)

In 2021 , the COVID-19 pandemic caused instability not only in the music scene but also in lifestyles and the economy, reminiscent of the social upheaval and chaos of the late 1960s . Although this is a performance by just two people, it might be interesting to listen while thinking of musical collectives such as the American AACM in Chicago, early Amon Duul in Germany, or Cornelius Cardew's Scratch Orchestra in England. Tabata's guitar, with its psychedelic effects, is as usual, but when Morita's rhythm is added, it sounded to me like self-destructing Krautrock.

This recording is improvisational music born in a spatial and temporal void in society during the COVID-19 pandemic, and can be considered a valuable record.
