Shigeo Tanaka, Ritsuko Tanaka - Yumi Kagura [CD] (Japanese import, 10th Anniversary)

Format: CD

Label: em RECORDS [4560283215967]

RELEASE DATE: October 16, 2026

Description:

Folk song discovery team Riyō Sanmyaku and M's 1st collaborative release. A CD of "Yumikagura," a legendary indigenous spiritual music designated as an intangible folk cultural property, has been repressed!

This is not Ethiopian music. This is not Manuel Göttsching's "E2-E4." This is not spiritual jazz. This is the oldest Kagura in Japan, passed down at Inaga Hachiman Shrine in Fuchu City (formerly Kamige Town), Hiroshima Prefecture. You may not believe it, but it is true.

Mysterious tones and beats are produced by striking a string stretched on a real "bow" with a thin bamboo stick, minimally engraved "surigane" sounds, a floating flute sound unrelated to them, and a "voice" that controls everything with a terrifying centripetal force.

This work is a remastered version of a 1991 recording made for archival purposes by the late Chief Priest Shigeo Tanaka, who was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette, for his in-depth research into Yumikagura, Kagura, special Shinto rituals, and Wakamiya. The CD version also includes a bonus recording of the chanting by Chief Priest Ritsuko Tanaka, the sole successor to Yumikagura.

This unparalleled music, which transcends the boundaries between entertainment and Shinto ritual, cannot be left untouched in libraries under the guise of being an intangible folk cultural property. This is a work that Riyō Sanmyaku and M Records present with the utmost respect and awe!

“Deep session! It is rare to hear folk music from Japan in such beautiful fidelity and incredible dynamics. This recording is intensely gorgeous and hauntingly disarming. This should open up a whole new world of adventurous listening for folks outside (and inside!) Japan.” — Brian Shimkovitz (Awesome Tapes From Africa)

“Sounds absolutely great! Super interesting and engaging.” — Ben UFO

“Just Give Me That Old Time Religion, It's Good Enough For Me.” — Japan Blues
