Description:

Hailing from Sweden, Obergman operates somewhere in the space between deep electronics, Detroit-influenced machine music and late-night dancefloor hypnosis. Since the mid 90’s, his unique explorations in sound and groove has seen him release on such esteemed labels as Skam, Börft, Abstract Forms, and most recently Craigie Knowes and Orson Records.

For his debut release on Cyphon Recordings, Obergman delivers four cuts of atmospheric, machine-driven music under the suitably cosmic title “Periodic Motion”. Opening the EP with an emotive late-night workout, “Many Body Problem” locks into a steady four-to-the-floor pulse driven by punchy 808 drums. Acidic touches flicker around melancholic synth chimes and warm chords, creating that rare combination of dancefloor momentum and introspective calm. Deep, heads-down electronics for the small hours.

On “Periodic Motion” the groove continues, but the mood shifts towards a more classic Detroit electro sensibility. Another 808-driven four-to the-floor rhythm provides the framework while a more gnarly, electro bassline takes centre stage. Mechanical but soulful, raw but spacious, a proper machine funk workout.

Flipping over, things get stripped right back on “Lagrange Invariant”. Simple, warm and deep, the track revolves around a bubbling bassline and hypnotic synth arpeggios, allowing plenty of space for the groove to breathe. Minimal in construction but rich in atmosphere, it’s a subtle, late-night roller built for locked-in dancefloors.

Closing the EP, “Dark Matter Halo” continues the journey into deeper territory. A snaking TB-303 line brings a restrained dose of acid, weaving through distant pads that feel glassy, glacial and almost weightless. Another exercise in restraint and contrast from Obergman - warmth and movement beneath a beautifully cold, serene surface.
